What is Book Value?
Book value is a company’s total assets minus its total liabilities, which is the accounting value of shareholders’ equity. Dividing it by the number of shares gives book value per share.
Why it matters
Comparing the share price with book value per share gives the price-to-book ratio, a common yardstick for banks and asset-heavy businesses.
