What is VIX (Volatility Index)?
The VIX is an index from Cboe that estimates the market’s expected volatility of the S&P 500 over the next 30 days, based on option prices. It is often called the fear gauge.
Why it matters
A higher VIX means investors expect bigger swings. It tends to spike when stocks fall sharply.
