What is Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT)?
A REIT is a company that owns, and usually operates, income-producing real estate such as apartments, warehouses or cell towers, and must pay out most of its income as dividends.
Why it matters
REITs let you invest in property through the stock market, and they tend to pay high dividends but respond to interest rates. See our Real Estate sector page.
