What is Market Index?
A market index is a published list of securities used to measure how a market or segment is performing, such as the S&P 500 for large US stocks.
Why it matters
You cannot invest in an index directly, but you can buy an index fund or ETF that tracks it. Indexes are the yardstick against which managers are judged.
