Ex-Dividend Date

What is Ex-Dividend Date?

The ex-dividend date is the cutoff for receiving the next dividend. You must own the stock before this date to get the payment.

Why it matters

On the ex-dividend date the share price usually drops by roughly the dividend amount, so buying just for the dividend does not create free money.
